Once launched, ExactScan Pro presents you with the following interface: I allowed it to install, but my review will cover only scanning from ExactScan Pro. Installation, Interface, and ProfilesĪfter the typical drag-and-drop copy into the Applications folder, a launch of ExactScan Pro offers to install TWAIN Bridge to permit scanning from other applications. During the trial period, scans get a small but prominent red banner at the top of scanned pages, but otherwise, the software is fully featured. If your scanner is in the list, head over to ExactScan’s download page for the free 14-day trial. You’ll notice that list includes a number of ScanSnap scanners, including the popular S1300 model that I own and used in my previous tests. Scanner CompatibilityĮxactScan Pro supports a wide variety of scanners, but you will need to check the compatibility page to make sure your scanner is supported before you purchase. ExactScan Pro hits the feature sweet spot, matches ScanSnap Manager and VueScan Professional most closely, and will be the focus of my review. Is it a more viable alternative to ScanSnap Manager? Let’s take a look.ĮxactScan comes in three varieties: the basic product for $79.99, the Pro version that adds OCR for searchable PDFs and other features for $99.99, and the Enterprise version that supports high-speed scanners for $297.50. While extremely capable and apparently a working solution for many people, VueScan Professional is a far cry from the ScanSnap Manager experience and suffered from various problems that I called out in that article.īut there’s another contender out there, ExactCODE’s ExactScan Pro. One such product is Hamrick Software’s VueScan Professional product, which I reviewed at length last year (see “ VueScan: Not the ScanSnap Replacement You’re Looking For,” 2 December 2019). Owners of perfectly functional older ScanSnap scanners face the difficult choice of either having to buy a new scanner or stay on macOS 10.14 Mojave.Įxcept that there’s another option-third-party scanner software. Their user-friendly hardware and uniquely simplified scanning software created a package that took the chore out of building a feature-rich, personalized scanning workflow.īut ScanSnap Manager, the magical desktop software that’s the secret sauce to this solution for the older generation of scanners that many of us are still using, is 32-bit software and therefore not compatible with macOS 10.15 Catalina. For details, see “ Surprise! Fujitsu Releases 64-Bit ScanSnap Manager for Older Scanners” (27 July 2020), or just keep reading for a review of ExactScan.įujitsu ScanSnap scanners became wildly popular many years ago by simplifying the process of going paperless. #1667: OS Rapid Security Responses, 1Password and 2FA, using Siri to request musicĮxactScan Might Be the ScanSnap Replacement You NeedĪ year after announcing it would not support older ScanSnap scanners with a 64-bit version of ScanSnap Manager, prompting this article, Fujitsu abruptly reversed course.#1668: Updated Rapid Security Responses, OS public betas, screen saver bug fixed, “Red Team Blues” book review.#1669: OS security updates, ambiguity of emoji, small business payments with Melio, Twitter now X.#1670: Arc Web browser hits 1.0 release, “Do You Use It?” polls about Apple features.#1671: Apple Q3 2023 earnings, new Beats headphones and earbuds, Stage Manager adoption rate, do you use Spotlight?.I’d feel silly buying a new scanner now and then using a dongle with it because I’d obviously not be buying the newest tech, and the only reason to buy a new scanner when my old one works fine, is to get with the newest tech. Now I’ve had this scanner for maybe 8 or 10 years and it works fine, but with the move to USB-C, I’d be willing to buy a new scanner to get new software that would allow it to run on the newest OS X, but it doesn’t seem like Fujitsu makes ScanSnap scanners that use USB-C, or at least their website doesn’t mention it. I also remember reading about some third party software but there was some weirdness with the license, like it was tied to the computer and I was potentially going to change computers in the next year so I didn’t go with that, I forget the exact reason. I have an old Fujitsu ScanSnap that I love, works great, but I haven’t updated OS X since High Sierra (10.13) because I read they stopped supporting new OS and were pushing people to buy new scanners.
